Former Tempe Mayor John C. Moeur died in his home on May 7 at the age of 91.

Moeur served as the mayor from 1964 through 1966 and spent the two years prior on the Tempe City Council. Moeur was the last mayor chosen by city council members; following his term, the newly formed city charter changed the rules to make mayors elected by voters.

“The City of Tempe is grateful to former Mayor Moeur for his service to our community,” Tempe Mayor Mark Mitchell said in a statement. “I am keeping his family in my thoughts and prayers.”

Moeur was the grandson of the state’s fourth governor, Benjamin B. Moeur, and operated two nurseries in Tempe before retiring.
