Matt McDonough has a new achievement to add to his medalist.
The former University of Iowa NCAA champion and Linn-Mar state titlist is now a World medalist.
McDonough recorded a 12-2 technical fall over Ukraine’s Petro Bileichuk, for the bronze medal at 125 1/2 pounds during the University World Championships on Tuesday in Pecs, Hungary.
McDonough, wrestling for Hawkeye Wrestling Club and Titan Mercury Wrestling Club, earned the chance to represent the United States, sweeping University Nationals champion Nahshon Garrett in a best-of-3 wrestle-off series last month in Tempe, Ariz., after finishing third at the U.S. World Team Trials.
McDonough went 2-1 overall, defeating Turkey’s Ziya Daylak, 16-6, in the quarterfinals. The loss came to Japan’s eventual champion Fumitaka Morishita, 10-7, in the semifinals.
He was one of three U.S. medalists, joining gold medalist Tyler Caldwell (163) and silver medalist Dustin Kilgore at 213.
