Here’s how Arizona’s 9 House members have voted for speaker
PHOENIX — The House has reached double-digit failed votes in electing a speaker since Tuesday, halting progress at the start of the new Congress.
Three of Arizona’s representatives have played a part in stymying what is typically a formality for a party that has just won majority control.
Longtime Reps. Andy Biggs, Paul Gosar and newcomer Eli Crane were among the 20 Republicans who have voted against electing California’s Kevin McCarthy as speaker due to the belief he’s not conservative enough, according to The Associated Press.
Gosar was the first of the three to change his pick to McCarthy, doing so Friday in the 12th round of voting.
Even with the dayslong delay, it’s not close to the most drawn out in U.S. history.
The longest fight for the gavel started in late 1855 and dragged on for two months, with 133 ballots, during debates over slavery in the run-up to the Civil War.
