PHOENIX — A child was hospitalized Saturday after an accidental shooting in Phoenix, authorities said.

Officers responded to calls of a shooting at an apartment complex near 19th Avenue and Indian School Road around 3:30 p.m., the Phoenix Police Department said in a press release.

When they arrived, they found a child with a gunshot wound, police said.

Fire personnel took the child to a hospital in critical condition where they progress to stable condition on Sunday.

Police said the child grabbed ahold of the firearm and while handling it, the firearm went off.

There were no other injuries in the apartment.

An investigation into the shooting remains ongoing.
