PHOENIX  — Arizona Department of Public Safety Director Col. Heston Silbert announced Tuesday he will retire from his post effective Friday.

Silbert has served as the department’s head since April 2020.

“It has been an honor of a lifetime to have served the men and women of the Department of Public Safety and the citizens of this great state,” Silbert said in a press release.

“As director I observed firsthand the selflessness, dedication and bravery of our Arizona State Troopers and professional staff.”

Silbert took over as department head following the retirement of Col. Frank Milstead, who served in the role for about five years.

He previously served as the department’s deputy director under Milstead since February 2015.

Silbert also has more than 25 years of combined service time with the Mesa and Phoenix police departments.

No details on a succession plan were immediately announced, but it’ll be new Arizona Gov. Katie Hobbs who decides Silbert’s replacement.
